Here are some helpful tips about boarding your dog, and selecting the right facility to care for your dog while you are away.

Our dogs are like our children, which is why parting ways with our furry friends to go on vacation can be emotional and difficult. Luckily there are precautions that can be taken to make sure that both you and your dog are prepared for boarding.

It is important to make sure you dog is comfortable and well behaved around other people. If your pup is not, it could lead to anxiety and disobedience while you are away.

Pack your dog’s regular dog food. Boarding is stressful, and a change in diet could potentially make your dog very uncomfortable and sick. Familiar food will keep them calm and healthy.

Health History

Make sure the boarding facility has a copy of your dog’s recent health history. This will help the facility keep your dog safe and avoid preventable accidents while in their custody

Up-to-date vaccinations are a must for dogs that are going to be boarded. Vaccinations not only protect you dog, they also protect the other dogs at the facility.

Stay Calm

Don’t let your pup know that you are upset when you are about to part ways. Dogs can sense emotions. The calmer you stay, the calmer your pup will be when you say goodbye.

Ask Questions

The more information you have about your pet’s accommodations, the more comfortable you will be when you are apart. Some useful questions to ask are:

  • Is the boarding facility a PCSA Member?
  • Is the staff trained or certified?
  • What is required of them to care for my pet?
  • Will my dog have access to outside areas to take a break and relieve himself?
  • How often will my dog be walked or allowed to play?
  • Will my dog interact with other dogs?
  • What happens if my dog gets injured?
